The income of people heavily depends on their main jobs. In NSW, there is an imaginary line called "Latte Line". The Latte Line expresses the difference in wealthiness of people in Sydney. The line lies down from Sydney Airport to Parramatta. The north, which is the upper part of Latte line is the country's most advanced area. On the other hand, the down part of latte line still remains quiet. This line is caused by the access to the jobs. The transportation system is limited if the location is far from the railway. This inconvenience really affects the people’s income.
The data set that i have selected is “Occupation by Hours by Sex”. This data set contains data of NSW; different occupations and the total number of people worked for different total number of worked hours in a week. I have selected 4 different categories of people from the dataset, which are:
In general, the hour of full-time jobs are considered as 40 hours. Therefore, I have selected these categories of people who worked for 40 hours. The types of jobs determine the wealthiness of people to some extent. And these two categories of jobs, the professionals and labourers would have a huge difference in incomes. By analyzing this dataset, it might be possible to find some kind of discriminations within the areas, which might relate to the “Latte Line”.
For each map, there are two different datasets used. On the left map, one is the percentage of male professionals who worked for 40 hours in a week. More the color is darker, it means that there are more male professionals in the area over female professionals. The height shows the total number of male professionals who worked for 40 hours. On the right map, it shows the total number of labourers who worked for 40 hours as the height, and percentage of male full-time labourers.
The map on the left has tall pillars compare to the map on the right. These tall pillars are concentrated on the CBD area of Sydney. In addition, it seems like there are more taller pillars on the upper part of Sydney’s latte line too. As this left map refers to the male full-time professionals, this means that there are more professionals in the city area over countryside areas. The map on the right refers to the full-time male labourers. As height is shorter than the map on the left for everywhere, this means that there are less people who work as a labourer than professional. However, those areas, which have a little higher pillars are located more in rural areas. These results would prove the existence of imaginary economic boundary, the latte line.
These two maps are similar to above two maps but they are for females this time. As same as the top left map, the female professionals are concentrated within the urban area. By looking at the labourers maps, there is a clear separation in working locations of labourers. They are mainly located at the bottom of latte line.
The colors on the maps shows the percentage of male and female workers. The darker the color is, the percentage is higher. By looking at two maps of professionals, both males and females, it can be seen that the percentage of each sex is somewhat similar in the urban areas. However by looking at carefully, there are more female professionals in the down part of Sydney’s latte line. Despite, the rural areas has a clear difference in the ratio of male and female professionals. For the labourers, there are more males in general, probably since the job itself requires the stamina and strength.
From the result of analysis, the existence of Latte line can be clearly drawn. This division of Sydney is affecting negatively on the down area of latte line. As the developments are focused on the urban areas, the disadvantaged areas will still remain undeveloped, therefore, the category of jobs available and its workforce for the disadvantaged area will be hard to change. This will end up in the low income for some people who lives in the rural areas. If the public transportation system gets improved, the latte line may change its form. However, to make every location accessible to the train, it will cost enormous amount of money so the Australian Government will take time fixing this problem.
